How to Read a Food Supplement Label Before You Buy
Updated: Sep 29
A food supplement label contains the information you need to understand what is in a product and how the manufacturer or brand intends it to be used. Reading the label before buying can make it easier to compare products accurately.
1. Identify the product and format
Check whether the product is a capsule, tablet, powder, liquid or patch and confirm the pack quantity. Online listings should match the format and quantity shown on the physical packaging.
2. Read the ingredient list
Ingredients are one of the most important parts of the label. Look beyond the front of the pack and check the complete ingredient declaration, including capsule materials, carriers and other ingredients where listed.
3. Check serving information
A headline amount can refer to a capsule, tablet, serving or daily portion, so check the directions carefully. Do not assume that a quantity in the product name automatically describes the recommended daily intake.
4. Review warnings and suitability
Pay attention to allergen information, age restrictions, pregnancy or breastfeeding warnings, medication cautions and storage instructions. If you have a medical condition or take medication, ask a healthcare professional if you are unsure about suitability.
5. Understand health and nutrition claims
Food-supplement advertising is different from medicine advertising. A food supplement should not claim to diagnose, treat or cure a disease. Nutrition and health claims should use authorised wording and meet the conditions that apply to that claim.
6. Check the seller and contact information
A trustworthy online product page should make it easy to identify the business selling the product and provide contact information, delivery details and returns information. Keep your order confirmation in case you need support.
7. Compare the online page with the product you receive
Packaging can change over time. When your order arrives, check that the product name, quantity and label information are consistent with what you ordered. If anything looks materially different, contact the seller before use.
A simple rule
Use the label as your primary product guide. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, and the directions on the actual pack should take priority over general online information.
